Cassava is a root,it looks almost like a yam,and it can be found in tropical area of the world such as Africa,south America,and Asian countries,cassava is an important food and inexpensive for both Human and animals alike,scientifically cassava is known as(manihotesculenta)digging deep into what cassava is and its health value,you most know what cassava really mean,it belongs to spurge family of plants known as (euphobiaceae)cassava have different types in Nigeria,we have sweet cassava and bitter cassava.sweet cassava is known as (Dan jokono in Hausa language) cassava is used in differents ways,cassava is use to produce garri which can be eating with a very delicious soup after turning the garri with a hot or worm water,and garri have two types of colors,there is white and yellow garri,majority of Nigerian prefer yellow garri than the white,and yellow garri is regarded as the best,because of the mixture of oil palm in the grinded cassava before processing it to garri ,which makes it looks yellow.cassava can also be process and pound like a pounded yam which can be eaten using a fantastic soup as well.pounded cassava is locally known in Nigeria as (fufu) cassava can also be cooked and slice then store in a cool water which is usually eaten when weather is hot,and is popularly known in the southern Nigeria as (abacha mmiri)cassava can be dry and grinded then use as a flour.and can be use to process cake and bread.
cassava chaf can be use to produce animal feed as energy source for the lives stocks.due to the scarcity of maize in Nigerian market, cassava has became the replacement for the procession of almost all poultry feed.even though the scarcity of maize have also help to increase the annual input of cassava to 100 million tonnes since year 2000.it is estimated that cassava is the future food for over 500 million people depending on it globally as the source of carbohydrates.even though cassava is a starchy food but it contain digestible starch which is easy to digest.
Cassava is one of the major means of economy in Nigeria,according to wikipedia,cassava is produced in 24 of the 36 states in Nigeria,in 1999 alone Nigeria produced 33 million tonnes .10 years later the country increased the production to almost 45 million tonnes,this indicates that Nigeria produced 19% of the global cassava production.approximately every hectare yield about 10.6 tonnes of cassava in the country.
as stated earlier cassava is a tropical grown plants,history has also shown that cassava came to Nigeria from southern America during the slave trade,in the early sixteenth century by the explorers from Portuguese,when the slave survivors return back to the southern
Nigeria,they stated practicing the processing of cassava,and since then cassava has be come the real source of food for not only the southern part of the country but to the whole of Nigeria.the country has being exporting cassava to other countries as the commodity.including the leaves,stems and tubers are in a high demand.as the largest producer of cassava in Nigeria, Cross River state,is leading the exportation of the cassava.other state that produces cassava in large quantity in Nigeria are,Anambra,Benue,Delta,Edo,Imo,Kwara,Oyo,and Ondo state, all this state produces cassava all year round because of its important to human health.but the cassava production is being handled by the small scale farmers,and the massive production is being hampered by some pastes like grasshopper,bacteria blight,mosaic diseases,root rot,and anthraenose.
however tremendous majors has being taken by all Nigerian farmers to increase and sustain the production of cassava to replaced the scarcity of carbohydrates food ranvaging its teaming population and to save the entire country from the alarming starvation.health benefits people derived from eating any cassava"s related product is unquantifiable.
